In recent years, the frequent occurrence of ice-covered weather has brought severe challenges to the safety of the power grid. Because OPGW runs without current through the overhead transmission line, its operating temperature is lower than the wire, OPGW covers ice earlier than the wire, and the distance between the wire and the wire is reduced, resulting in high-temperature arc generated by the discharge between the wire and OPGW, resulting in wire breakage, cable breakage, tripping and other accidents. This paper studies the manufacturing feasibility of aluminum-covered steel wire for high strength and low density OPGW. By improving the performance of aluminum-covered steel wire for OPGW, the mechanical strength and overloading capacity of OPGW can be improved, the base load of the line can be reduced, and the short-circuit current performance can be improved without changing the OPGW structure. Compared with the conventional OPGW with the same section under the same ice condition, the sag characteristics are excellent, which reduces the safety risk of OPGW and conductor operation under the ice weather.
