Instrumentation Failures in Minimally Invasive Lumbar Fusion Surgery and Their Management

Lumbar Fusion is one of the preferred surgical options for the management of degenerative lumbar disc disease. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) lumbar fusion offers reduced tissue damage and faster recovery compared to open techniques, and is becoming increasing popular. However the narrow working corridors in MIS approach can preclude optimal implant positioning, resulting in mechanical failures and pseudoarthrosis. Furthermore, the intact posterior tension band in these procedures challenges the establishment of optimal lordosis, increasing the risk of spinal alignment issues. Hence, understanding these surgical factors, careful planning and management of complications are essential to ensure successful patient outcomes.
