Unraveling the Unseen Gaps: The Differential Influence of Panoramic Videos and Traditional Visual Media on Landscape Perception

This study investigates the information interaction between individuals and environments through controlled experiments comparing the mechanisms of influencing visual perception of static photographs, conventional fixed-perspective videos, and panoramic videos, providing guidance for media selection in diverse landscape visual preference experiment scenarios. All the three methods introduce measurement errors, with panoramic videos exhibiting the highest scene fidelity while static photographs show the lowest. Mean score reveals that video-based media elicit more positive visual responses than static images. Variance shows non-panoramic media lose perspective information, with regular videos at 56.51% and photos at 57.74% of panoramic video variance. Correlation coefficient quantification further confirms that static photographs distort subjects’ perception of landscape elements like walls and roads. Although panoramic videos employing autostereoscopic 3D projection technology deliver coherent, 360° immersive visuals that accurately convey spatial information and simulate real environments, practical experimental efficiency considerations necessitate tailored media selection based on specific spatial typologies being simulated.
