This chapter argues that Homo Academicus, one of Bourdieu’s main works, can serve as an interpretive framework that conceptually guides the analysis of power dynamics, stratification, and symbolic practices in higher education. In other words, Bourdieu’s concepts can serve as both a theoretical reference and a reflexive instrument for rereading empirical experience and academic practice itself. Although in a different context, this chapter adds New PublicPublic ManagementPublic Management (NPM)New Public Management (NPM) as a concept of Homo Academicus affinity to support the description of neoliberalism at the management level. The idea of NPM has long bridged the amplification of market rates in the public sector, including higher education. Evidence in Indonesia shows that the marriage of neoliberalism with NPM resulted in establishing state universities with legal entities and public service agencies. Universities are given the freedom to collaborate with the private sectorprivate sector and free themselves from the role of central politics. This chapter ends with discussing the forms of distinction and symbolic violence of academics (lecturers and students).
