Adventures in Guiyang

In Guiyang there was a senior official at The Bureau of Opium Prohibition, Lu Foyan, who was the best friend of Wu’s parents. He was also an old friend of Sun Yat-sen. We sought help from him and lived in his place for more than 5 days while we were trying to get tickets to Chongqing. During our stay it was the mid-autumn festival, so he treated us with his 30-year old Maotai liquor. Following the tradition from Guangdong, everyone had to propose a toast to everyone else. The liquor smelt so good that I gulped down 24 shots without realizing how much I had consumed. I passed out and slept until 4 pm the following afternoon. It surprised me that after I woke up, my mouth was still flavored with a good smell, and I didn’t have any symptoms of a hangover.
