Anjiang Village and the Student Movement

In 1939, Kunming suffered an unprecedented number of air raids from Japan. So, by the end of November, our school was forced to move to Anjiang Village, Jinning County on the south bank of Dianchi Lake. We rented 5 temples in the village as the instructional buildings and resumed our classes. In April the next year, the National Art Exhibition was held in Chongqing. One of my paintings of a nude and 24 quick sketches were exhibited. The Central Daily News wrote a feature report about my painting but they mistakenly used Yang in my name instead of the correct one, Xiang. After the exhibition, my 24 sketches were returned without any problem, but the oil painting was missing. Mr. Pang Xunqin had originally planned to publish these 24 sketches, but unfortunately they were destroyed during the Great Cultural Revolution. What a pity that this happened! (Fig. 11.1).
