Defining Synergies Between Cybersecurity and Sustainability

With the development of civilization and advances in technology, almost every aspect of human activity is interrelated with modern digital technologies. However, these technologies represent not only opportunities but also threats. This implies the need for cybersecurity principles. This also applies to sustainable development, the implementation of which is based on modern digital tools. The present chapter focuses on identifying synergies between the two areas while highlighting the main cyber threats which sustainability systems and critical infrastructure elements are exposed to. The conclusions point to the need for a simultaneous and joint development of sustainability and cybersecurity elements, which at the same time has implications for the broader security of societies and states. Finally, it will be discussed how European Legislations build on the duality of sustainability and cybersecurity to shape access to the European Union Single Market.
