摘要

From our daily life to complex industrial environments in almost all sectors, Artificial Intelligence (AI) undoubtedly joined the list of the greatest revolutions of human history. However, like many of them, it comes with opportunities and threats. From the environmental impact of data centers to economic and social risks in labor markets, the sustainability of AI systems must progress hand in hand with their technical development. In this Chapter, we provide an overview of the main challenges of sustainability in the context of AI. Considering all sustainability pillars related to environmental, social, and economic challenges, we introduce the main aspects of Responsible AI. Then, we focus on the fundamental question of where to host AI-related processing, with a thorough discussion on data centers and edge computing. Finally, in continuity with Chap. 10 , we consider the use of AI in 6G networks, with its double role of enabling and enabled technology, with a specific focus on sustainability aspects.
