Imported Ceramics in the Liao Territory

This chapter systematically examines the presence and significance of imported ceramics within the territory of the Liao Dynasty. Section 5.1 offers a detailed typological and technological analysis of the imported wares, identifying their origins and distinguishing characteristics. Building on this, Section 5.2 reconstructs the trade routes through which these ceramics entered Liao territory, situating the material flows within the broader context of diplomatic and economic exchanges between the Liao court and the Five Dynasties and Northern Song. Finally, Section 5.3 investigates the chronological fluctuations in the volume and variety of imported ceramics, exploring the rise and decline of specific types and addressing related issues such as changing consumer preferences, shifts in political relations, and the potential impact of local ceramic production. Collectively, the chapter argues that imported ceramics serve as sensitive material indicators of the complex, evolving nature of Liao’s external relations and its internal cultural dynamics.
