Periodization and Discussion of Liao Ceramics

This chapter addresses the periodization of Liao dynasty ceramics as a framework for understanding their stylistic, technological, and historical evolution. Section 4.1 reviews prior scholarship on Liao tomb chronologies and existing proposals for ceramic periodization, identifying points of consensus and unresolved debates. Building on this foundation, Section 4.2 establishes a refined periodization scheme for Liao ceramics, detailing the defining characteristics for each chronological phase. Section 4.3 interprets these ceramic changes in light of broader historical developments, examining how shifting political relations, economic conditions, cultural exchanges, and nomadic-sedentary interactions are materially reflected in Liao ceramic production and consumption. By integrating archaeological evidence with historical analysis, the chapter demonstrates that Liao ceramics are not merely chronological markers but also dynamic indicators of social, cultural, and political transformation within the Liao realm.
