Types of Liao Ceramics

Ceramics produced in kilns within the Liao territory exhibit a rich variety of glaze colors, diverse forms, and distinct decorative motifs, collectively forming the typological system of Liao ceramics. The first three sections of this chapter provide detailed discussions and analyses of Liao ceramic types, primarily focusing on glaze varieties, vessel forms, and decorative patterns. Based on the discussions, section four reveals that the cultural factors behind Liao ceramics are more diverse and can be summarized into three main aspects: the Khitan cultural factors, the Han cultural factors of the Tang and Song dynasties, and the Western cultural factors.
