Technology-Enhanced Post-Stroke Rehabilitation: What’s Achievable in Low-Resource Settings

Stroke is a leading cause of disability worldwide, leaving many survivors with persistent impairments requiring long-term rehabilitation. Access to adequate care is particularly challenging in low-resource settings, where affordability and availability of rehabilitation services remain major barriers. Recent advancements in technology offer promising solutions to enhance post-stroke recovery, addressing motor, sensory, cognitive, and emotional deficits. Despite their potential, the high cost of many technologies limits their integration in low-resource contexts. However, locally manufactured, affordable solutions demonstrate the feasibility of scaling these interventions. Further innovation and evidence-based implementation of affordable, context-specific technologies are critical for meeting the growing demand for stroke rehabilitation in underserved areas. Collaboration among researchers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers is essential to ensure equitable access to these advancements, thereby improving patient outcomes and quality of life globally.
