Recent Developments in Fungal Biotechnology for Biodiesel Production: Application Potential, Challenges, and Perspectives

The growing concern with sustainable energy sources has driven extensive research in biodiesel production by microorganisms, and fungal biotechnology is one of the most promising directions. The oleaginous fungi and yeasts have the ability to store lipids and convert cheap byproduct materials, including plant industry wastes, agricultural wastes, and lignocellulosic biomass, into desirable lipids. The recent innovations in strain optimization, genetic engineering, and fermentation methodologies have increased the production of biodiesels, hence increasing the economic and operational feasibility of the production. Fungal lipases provide a biocatalytic path to transesterification, eliminating the need to use chemical processes. However, the issue of scalability, affordability, and process optimization continues to pose a major challenge to industrial implementation. This chapter discusses the current trends, significant applications, technological developments, and the ongoing challenges of producing fungal biodiesel. Moreover, future possibilities such as the CRISPR-based strain engineering, embedded biorefinery methods, and governing policy infrastructure that might stimulate the commercialization of fungal biodiesel are also discussed. Overall, the chapter gives a comprehensive overview of fungal biotechnology in the future biofuel economy.
