Tannins and Saponins: Natural Defense Compounds in Animal Feed

Rapid advancements in microbial resistance have made it the world’s leading cause of mortality. Finding substitutes to combat microbes has become essential. Valuable secondary metabolites, including terpenoids, polyphenols, alkaloids, quinones, and tannins, are abundant in plants. Secondary metabolites found in plants are a source for the discovery of antibiotics. Essential oils, tannins, and saponins are naturally occurring plant compounds that are evaluated as natural substitutes for in-feed antibiotics. Plants contain a number of polyphenolic compounds called tannins that have biological properties such as antimicrobial, anti-parasitic, antiviral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. Numerous plant and marine animal species produce saponins, which are secondary metabolites. Their microbial, anti-tumor, anti-insect, hepatoprotective, hemolytic, and anti-inflammatory properties have medical applications, used as an adjuvant in vaccines and to lower blood cholesterol levels. The sum of methane that can be decreased by enteric fermentation relies on the levels and sources of saponin and tannin. In order to control ruminal fermentation, saponnins have function in the rumen as membrane permeabilizing, immunostimulating, hypocholesterolaemic, and defaunting agents. Saponins obstruct the digestion of proteins in the gut, interact with cholesterol in the cell membrane, cleave cells, and remove ruminal protozoa exclusively. This upgrades the efficiency of N-use and likely improves ruminant animal performance.
