Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Synbiotics: Enhancing Gut Health and Productivity in Animal Production

摘要

Probiotics and prebiotics perform a vital role in improving the health, nutrition, and productivity of animals. Probiotics are live microorganisms that confer nutritional and health benefits to the host by improving gut microbes, improving digestion, and boosting the immune system. The influences of probiotics are species-specific and perform a definitive function in the host, for example, the Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces strains are responsible for the modulation of intestinal microbes and inhibit pathogens. Prebiotics, on the other hand, are non-digestible dietary fibers that stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria selectively. The combined application of both these products is known as synbiotics, which has gained attention for its synergistic effects on growth performance, feed efficiency, and disease resistance. These functional feed supplements are also beneficial as a replacement for the antibiotics growth promoters (AGPs), along with the increasing demand for sustainable and antibiotic-free livestock production. This chapter explores the applications, sources, mechanisms, and benefits of probiotics and prebiotics in animal nutrition, emphasizing their role in balancing gut health, increasing immune responses, and developing sustainable animal production. Future research is needed to focus on strain-specific effects, dosage optimization, and long-term effects on animal species in livestock and aquaculture.
