Orchids in Nepal: Status, Threats and Conservation Strategies

Nepal is exceptionally rich in orchid flora, with Orchidaceae being the largest plant family in the country, comprising 93 genera, 451 species, and 6 varieties. The orchid species hold significant economic values due to their ornamental appeal and medicinal properties. Among them, 16 species and 2 varieties are endemic to Nepal, and over 90 species are known for their medicinal uses. This chapter highlights the current status of Nepal’s orchid flora and to emphasize the threats they face, along with strategies for their conservation.
