Nutraceutical and Cosmeceutical Value of Orchids

Orchids have long been cherished by communities worldwide for their culinary and medicinal properties. In indigenous traditional healing systems like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, and African Traditional Medicine (ATM), orchids are often used to treat various ailments, including infections, respiratory issues, and skin problems. As a nutraceutical, orchids are gaining more importance again in the African community setup due to the shift toward the use of naturally obtained products of food and medicinal value. Research into the ethnobotanical uses of orchids has continued to shed light on their phytochemical and pharmacological properties, revealing a rich mix of nutrients as well as bioactive compounds with great potential for commercialization. These compounds have been linked to numerous health benefits, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. The polymeric mixture of groundnuts and edible soda forms a potential weight loss food substitute for conventional polonies made from meat products. This is due to its characteristic filling nature. As a result, orchids are increasingly being used in nutraceuticals and cosmetics for their skin-protective and rejuvenating properties. This overview highlights the significance of orchids’ bioactive compounds and their potential applications in promoting health and well-being.
