Perspectives on the Industrial Application of the Silkworm Biofactory and Outlook
摘要
This chapter discusses the industrial applications and future outlook of the silkworm (Bombyx mori) biofactory for recombinant protein production. It traces the history of commercialization, starting with the first successful veterinary interferon in the 1990s, and highlights recent advancements in scalable production and downstream processing. The chapter reviews various commercialized silkworm-derived products, emphasizing the platform’s advantages, such as cost-effectiveness and appropriate post-translational modifications. Looking ahead, it explores the potential of utilizing transgenic silkworms and the integration of artificial intelligence to optimize expression systems, paving the way for broader adoption in biopharmaceuticals and materials science.
