Targeting Apicoplasts in Plasmodium falciparum, Origin and Pathways

The apicoplast is an important source of antimalarial drug target. The in-depth evaluation and examination showed that apicoplast is a potent pharmacological target that is strengthen by the virtue of its peculiar shared prokaryotic and plant-like cellular properties, functions, and diverse activities, which has made the apicoplast as one of the interesting focuses for future research in pharmacology. Research into the apicoplast has uncovered innovative molecules with promising properties that have significant potential in medical science. Studies indicate that apicoplast biology offers multiple promising avenues for novel targets, including the production of isoprenoids and genetic transcription processes. Furthermore, several proteins and many other yet-to-be-explored molecules within the apicoplast are also seen as potential targets for future research and therapeutic development. Genetic material and genetic code are not important for processes which are important for activities of apicoplast function and parasite survival. The independence of apicoplast activities from genetic information is primarily observed in its metabolic functions, which are of great significance in the current trends of pharmacological research. Using various tissues and cell-based tests evaluation of apicoplast as drug target can now be done based on typical drug reactions and responses utilized to forecast effectiveness of treatments. Various other organelles and associated pathways are on target by drugs against P. falciparum. Apicoplast role and activities in targeting the drugs are supported through evolutionary lineage of various parasites.
