Role of Diet in Improving Gut Microbiota in Autism

摘要

Autism is a multifaceted developmental disorder encompassing behavioral, social, and linguistic challenges. While the exact etiology remains elusive, a significant connection has been observed between the gastrointestinal system and autism. Evidence points to modifications in the arrangement of gut microbiota among autistic subjects. Alterations are influenced by disturbances in the gut-brain connection. It is a complex that connects the brain and gut, where communication flows in two directions it involves interactions between the central nervous system and microorganisms in the gut. In a person with autism spectrum disorder, there is a disruption in the balance of these microbes, known as dysbiosis. Studies show the link between gut microbial products, like short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), inflammation which triggers the immune system, through the vagus nerve, impacts the central nervous system, and potentially contributes to behavioral changes in ASD. It is also related to changes in bacterial populations, such as a higher Proteobacteria and a lower Bifidobacterium. Special nutritional supplements involving probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics show promising effects in rebalancing gut microbes and improving ASD symptoms. Probiotic supplements, by altering the gut microbial composition, have led to better gastrointestinal symptoms and social-cognitive improvements in ASD. Prebiotics, which feed beneficial microorganisms, also regulate gut microbes and related cognitive issues. Synbiotic combinations, a mix of probiotics and prebiotics, provide a combined approach to enhancing gut microbial balance and alleviating ASD symptoms.
