Yiwu, known for hosting the world’s largest small commodity market, has emerged as a bustling hub of commerce in China. Today, in the new era of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), it has once again captured the spotlight due to the “Yiwu-Xinjiang-Europe” route, known as Yixin’ou in Chinese. This chapter will expand on the development phases of the Yixin’ou route. This will provide the basis for a closer examination of how the shift in Yiwu’s strategic objectives, both before and after the introduction of the BRI, has impacted the role of Yixin’ou route in the city’s development. Additionally, it will delve into how these shifts in strategic goals have driven changes in its development model.
