Critical Whiteness in Sports and Recreation

Sport and recreation, by virtue of their existence, supports comradery, community development, team building, and inclusion of people with all capabilities and abilities. Yet, despite being a bastion of inclusiveness and mateship, Whiteness seeps into sports in recreation in various and often, invisible ways. While systems that manage and govern both sports professionals are often seen to virtuously quote their progressiveness, behind the scenes that are less virtuous, and often maintain discriminatory attitudes, such as racism, transphobia, and homophobia. Therefore, the significance of deconstructing the pervasiveness of the dominant discourses of Critical Whiteness in Sports and Recreation is fundamental to ensure that the virtues of what sport and recreation are conceptualized as can be at the forefront of a more inclusive tomorrow.
