Fern belongs to Pteridophyte is a group of plants that can be found in almost every region in Indonesia. This study aimed to analyze the bioactivities and phytochemicals of some fern species i.e., Pteridium caudatum, Acrostichum aureum, Lygodium circinnatum, Lycopodium cernuum, Ceratopteris thalictroides, Acrostichum speciosum, Blechnum orientale, and Salvinia molesta. This study includes qualitative phytochemical analysis to evaluate the presence of alkaloid, triterpenoid, steroid, flavonoid, tannin, coumarin, carotenoid and carbohydrate. Antimicrobial assay was conducted using an agar-well diffusion against Propionibacterium acnes, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus sobrinus, and a yeast-like fungus, Candida albicans. Toxicity of the fern extracts was evaluated by a Brine Shrimp Lethality Test using gallic acid as a positive control. The results of the phytochemical showed the appearance of coumarin, tannin, carbohydrate, steroid, and carotenoid. The results displayed that Pteridium caudatum, Acrostichum aureum, Lygodium circinnatum, Ceratopteris thalictroides, and Blechnum orientale, possessed potential growth inhibition on microorganism tested. Three fern species, Pteridium caudatum, Blechnum orientale, and Salvinia molesta were considered non-toxic based on the toxicity assay, with LC50 values of 2672 ppm, 1410 ppm, and 1670 ppm, respectively.
