Resurgence of Populism in Central Asia: Revival of a New Identity

摘要

Since the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Central Asian countries have witnessed dramatic transformation from socialist republics to independent states with unique political systems. In order to win popular support and legitimacy in particular within the urban and working-class population in Central Asia, leadership of the region has used a populist ideology. They often use the nationalist and patriotic rhetoric to emphasize their commitment to their countries and their people. This essay purposes to examine the nature of populist and conservative leadership in Central Asian countries.
