Populism, Democracy, and Dissent

This entry locates dissent as a point of enquiry to engage with the notion of democracy and its practice across the globe. Major movements across continents are traced to understand the trajectories of democracy in action and in crisis. This entry links dissent, democracy, and populist movements and how dissent as a tool becomes one of the dominant sites where the disagreement of the public over various chronic failings of the state – including rising socio-cultural intolerance, ideological differences, and marginalization of particular groups of people in the periphery – are negotiated. In addition, this entry looks at some of the key indicators driving the global protest wave and further examines whether these protest movements have led to policy or leadership change in response to the protests.
