Populism in the West: A Critical Overview of Elitist Narratives

This study describes the shift in the American Liberal discourse at home and abroad in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. With the background of Classical Liberal principles in mind, it would articulate the pitfalls of the extremely adversarial approach taken by the Liberal elites of the day. Liberal overconfidence in their ideological omnipotence has been the reason behind the creation of Populist enemies at home and abroad. This development goes contrary to their strategic interests. Therefore, this overview of Liberal narratives against the Shadow Enemy of Populism argues against Liberal overreach and advocates restraint and dialogue. The exaggerated demonology of Populist movements should be toned down for an honest conversation about Liberal privilege to even begin registering in the opinion discourse.
