Nanotechnology in Wound Healing

Wound care is one of the critical managements in healthcare services that urge well-being of the patient. The concerned USD 20.8 billion (in 2022) market has several components which include dressing materials such as foam, film, hydrocolloid, collagen, etc., devices for negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), assessment, debridement, and graft, matrix, suture, stapler, etc. for various kind of wounds including normal cut to diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), trauma, surgical wound, burn, etc. Faster and better wound healing is desired for favorable outcome of the treatment, hence require improved wound healing materials for repair of the disintegrated tissue, maintaining proper homeostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodeling, removing any sources of infection and other secondary complications along with case-specific carrier system to deliver specific drugs or factors at the wound site in both animal and human subjects. The urge is even more prominent in cases like diabetic patients or animals in production that need little residual effect. Hence, there is a continuous quest for finding such formulations to achieve aforesaid targets, more importantly, in the era of antibiotic resistance. Recent enrichment in knowledge about nanomaterials and their properties has enhanced the hope for formulating dressing materials with all ideal properties required on cases to case basis. Various nanomaterials have shown positive attributes in healing of different wounds due to their specific inherited advantages. Present chapter has emphasized on applications of various nanomaterials as dressing materials, antimicrobial agents, anti-inflammatory action, delivery system, angiogenic materials, etc., for effective and faster wound healing, along with their advantages at current perspective.
