We are proud of the short but rich history of the dynamic Korean Catholic Church. The voluntary acceptance of Catholicism, the founding of the church, numerous martyrs and glory, persecution and victories, and the splendid growth of the 2000s are undoubtedly something to be proud of that is hard to find anywhere else in the world. In the 230-year’s history of the Catholic Church in Korea, although the church architecture has its history for only 130 years, it has changed and developed in various ways as a symbol of the development of Korean Catholic culture that reflects the attitude and consciousness of faith. However, it is difficult to find a church architecture suitable for the rapid growth and development of the church. In order to provide an academic foundation for the evangelization of the Korean people and the renewal and development of the Korean church, the systematization and identity of Korean Catholic culture must be discussed above all else. In this context, the author would like to review the 130-year history of Catholic Church architecture in Korea. This chapter describes the process of transformation and development of Catholic Church architecture in six stages. This author tried to approach it from historical concept of architecture and empirical investigation. Therefore, the history of style-oriented changes on Korean Catholic Church buildings will be viewed from the lens of local Korean architecture, modern architecture, and Western church architecture.
