Global economic dynamics have been significantly altered with the advent of the knowledge economy: information, technology, and innovation have become the main engines of growth. Though often overlooked, data centers are the backbone of this economic transformation; they provide the essential infrastructure to store, process, and transmit the ever-increasing volume of data required by businesses and industries. This entry begins by examining the role of data centers within the knowledge economy: for instance, they play a crucial role in fostering innovation, enabling productivity, and supporting emerging technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT). However, it is contended herein that the geographical concentration of data centers in high-income regions has augmented global inequalities. In this regard, this entry puts forward the idea that economic growth is hindered by the phenomenon of “insular stagnation,” which refers to how the concentration of data infrastructure in certain regions creates barriers for countries with less-developed digital ecosystems. By resorting to the figures provided by authoritative studies on this matter, this entry shows how the lack of data centers in low- and middle-income countries obstructs economic participation and perpetuates disparities in innovation and technological advancement. Amidst this backdrop, current research argues that strategic institutional reforms are necessary to mitigate these issues. Said reforms should focus on boosting investment in underserved regions, promoting competition, and ensuring equitable access to digital infrastructure. Policy suggestions encompass improving ICT infrastructure, fostering public-private partnerships, and incentivizing innovation to bridge digital divides. The entry concludes that decentralizing data center infrastructure and fostering inclusive digital economies is crucial for achieving sustainable, global economic growth that benefits all regions; this will help reduce inequality and support broader participation in the knowledge economy.
