ChatGPT and Higher Education in China: Opportunities and Challenges

China’s reliance on the National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) system, which emphasizes rote learning and exam-focused preparation, faces challenges in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically with the emergence of ChatGPT. This chapter critically examines the impact of ChatGPT on the Chinese higher education paradigm. ChatGPT, with its vast knowledge repository, rapid information processing, and interdisciplinary integration, projects a profound shift from conventional learning models. The AI’s human-like comprehension, coupled with its adaptive learning capabilities, presents an enriched educational platform, fostering a proactive and exploratory educational approach. This chapter advocates for the integration of ChatGPT into the China’s higher education system, suggesting a transition from linear, conventional methodologies to a dynamic, AI-enhanced model. By leveraging ChatGPT, China’s higher education could emphasize deep understanding over rote learning, promoting critical thinking and independent inquiry. This chapter emphasizes the necessity of adopting “Agile Governance” model in Chinas higher education, emphasizing open information sharing, collaborative research, and a flexible approach to knowledge dissemination. In essence, the integration of ChatGPT in higher education could pave the way for a more responsive and innovative Chinese higher education system, better preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the AI epoch.
