In the world of SMB, the interaction between client and server is framed not only by the structure of requests and responses but by an “underlying presumption”: that there is someone to talk to on the other side. The protocol does not begin with files or sessions—it begins with presence, with discovery, and with the ancient act of asking, “Are you there?”
