The chapter explores the impact of crises on the values of the European Union with the aim to comprehensively assess different aspects and basic trends of this effect on the implementation of European Union values and to discuss their sufficiency, taking their nature and role into account. This is being achieved, initially, researching the development and establishment of European Union values in European Union law and evaluating their nature, role and functions. Further, addressing the impact of crises in general, our focus is on the migration crisis (cases of the Mediterranean migration crisis and “instrumentalised” migration from Belarus) and the security crisis (Russia’s war in Ukraine). Finally, the research deals with the possibilities of and challenges to the enforcement of these values and assesses their vitality. Systematic and structural research of the evolution, nature, contents of European Union values and their resilience to threats leads to insights on crisis-related developments, and some reservations on the sufficiency of European Union values is expressed. The conclusions reflect comprehensive insights on the challenges related with the conceptual and procedural aspects of how the researched values are defined, perceived and safeguarded, differences between the value in question and the type of crisis and possible options to strengthen the role of European Union values and increase their resilience to threats.
