This chapter explores the European Union (EU) accession experiences of Latvia and Ukraine, analysing how Latvia’s structured and politically supported path to EU membership offers both insights and contrasts to Ukraine’s current trajectory. The study examines legal and institutional reforms undertaken by Latvia, particularly its constitutional and judicial transformations during the 1990s and early 2000s. In contrast, Ukraine’s accession bid is shaped by ongoing war, geopolitical tensions, and internal challenges such as corruption and judicial politicization. The chapter argues that while Latvia’s experience provides useful lessons—particularly on how to align the national legal system with EU law—Ukraine’s integration process will require a more flexible and politically adaptive approach from the EU. The chapter suggests that Ukraine’s strategic significance may prompt a rethinking of traditional enlargement mechanisms, potentially leading to a new model of EU integration.
