The shaping of Indonesian copyright lawIndonesian copyright law into its current form has been influenced by both external and internal factors. Initially, it was heavily influenced by Dutch law during its early years of independence. Later, Indonesia faced international pressures from the US and the UK due to its failure to meet international copyright protection standards. Domestically, copyright in Indonesia is a complex domain because it has to accommodate both adat (customary) and Islamic lawIslamic law. With the rapid development of technology, Indonesian copyright law must evolve while reflecting the socio-technical realities of its people. When dealing with AI specifically, Indonesia has a National Strategy on AI which focuses on five priority sectors, namely educationEducation, health, bureaucracy reform, food securitySecurity, and smart cities. While this strategy outlines the general objectives for AI, it does not address the ownership of AI-generated worksAI-generated works. The discussion in this chapter also explores the technological aspects of generative AIGenerative AI, emphasising the importance of the human contribution in creating AI-generated works.
