The Steady Creep of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations in India: Implications for People and the Planet

  • Malavika Parthasarathy

摘要

There has been a steep growth in the number of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) in India, particularly in the poultry sector. Using the poultry sector in Tamil Nadu as a case study and enhanced by field research, this chapter argues that a range of harms have accompanied the rise of CAFOs in the poultry sector, with grave implications not just for animals, but for people and prosperity. The chapter suggests a turn towards Indian constitutional law principles on ecology in framing, understanding, and responding to the risks posed by CAFOs.
