Ballistic Response of High–Strength Steel Against Small–Arm Projectiles—Numerical Modelling

Critical infrastructureCritical infrastructure, asNumerical modelling well as military and civil equipment, buildings, and Light Armored Vehicles (LAV), may encounter blast or ballistic impacts during their operational lifespan. These extreme forces induce significant deformations and stresses within fractions of a second. Addressing this challenge requires rigorous assessment and enhancement of structural response against such intense, transient loads. For this purpose, numerical simulations are often used as an alternative solution to the analytical or experimental approaches. However, the accuracy of numerical simulations relies on the precise characterization of material properties under varying conditions. To reliably evaluate the structural response to this kind of loads, careful validation of the numerical model represents an essential step. This paper presents the numerical aspects in modeling ballistic responseBallistic response of high strength steel against small-arms projectiles as 7.62 mm armor piercing ammunition.
