Humanitarian Response to the Basic Psychosocial Needs of Refugees

Displacement, resettlement, voluntary and forced displacement due to conflict, persecution, natural and humanitarian disasters and other crisesCrises often cause profound psychological and emotional challenges for individuals and communities alike. States are faced with the strain on their Social InfrastructureSocial infrastructures Systems every time a disaster occurs. Therefore, to mitigate the impact, humanitarian NGOs play a key role in providing psychosocial support services aimed at restoring a sense of normalcy, promoting mental well-being and facilitating the social integration of refugeesRefugees and their return. This paper explores different aspects of effective humanitarian responses to basic psychosocial needsPsychosocial needs, including basic humanitarian needs, the provision of mental health services, community participation, cultural sensitivity and the creation of safe spaces. Drawing on an analysis of the activities of the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta and the Hungarian Red Cross, the research highlights and demonstrates the importance of cooperation between humanitarian organisations, host communities and refugeesRefugees themselves in upholding and enforcing basic human securitySecurity principles.
