Urban Reconstruction in Post-War Ukraine: Development Strategies

The current paper, based on current events, aims to describe some possible development and reconstruction strategies regarding the restoration of Ukraine’s heritage, which was severely damaged by the ruthless attack of the Russian Federation starting two years ago. Russia’s aggression against Ukraine resulted in the loss of human lives, the destruction of strategic, industrial, residential, cultural objectives, the contamination of land, the destruction of agriculture. The current war uses both the military use of drones and satellites, but also the fight in trenches, in bunkers and, implicitly, excavations that lead to the destruction of cultural heritage. Ukraine is affected both in the active war zones and in the areas near Kiev. The true extent of the destruction can be determined by the systematic research of the affected locations, which can last a long time after the war ends. Ukraine and Russia are signatories of the Hague Convention of 1954, with the obligation to protect heritage in case of armed conflict. For example, 7 Ukrainian sites can be found in the UNESCO world heritage.
