Ionic Liquid-Mediated Pretreatment and Saccharification

Ionic liquid pretreatment followed by saccharification is a promising emerging method of biomass processing. General considerations when working with ionic liquids, the physiochemical effects of ionic liquid pretreatment, as well as some of the technical considerations of ionic liquid-based processes will be discussed. The effects of ionic liquid pretreatment on the subsequent acid or enzymatic saccharification as well as alternative processing schemes for saccharification are considered. Finally, applications of ionic liquid biomass processing on emerging feedstocks are discussed.
