Religions shape, transform, guide, and sustain human cultures. As basic components of a culture, crafts and businesses naturally have their deep religious roots. Shintoism, a native religion since ancient times in Japan, has exerted a profound and enduring influence on Japanese crafts and businesses. This chapter attempts to examine the Shinto roots of Japanese crafts and businesses through the oral teachings of its famed temple carpenters (miyadaiku) passed down through generations by their ancestors. Chiefly through the analysis of the contents of the oral teachings of the temple carpentry craft and supplemented by an examination of the life and work of an iconic master carpenter Tsunekazu Nishioka, connections between Shintoism and the business spirit of the craft are revealed. Lessons for business ethics are explored.
