For a very long time, musical historiography claimed that Handel’s music was little known in nineteenth-century France and that the French discovered the Messiah as late as 1873. However, during the last twenty years, musicologists have shown that Handel’s works were heard in Paris as early as the 1820s, thanks to the concerts given by Alexandre Choron and his Institution de musique religieuse, followed by those by the Prince of Moskowa and performances of oratorios excerpts at the Société des concerts du Conservatoire.1
