Some reflections on the relationship between Handel and John Christopher Smith

John Byrom’s famous verse, which he described as an ‘epigram’, relates to the situation of the opera company at the King’s Theatre in London. It dates from 1725, though its subject was already out of date because Bononcini had been dismissed as a composer for the Royal Academy of Music after the 1723–1724 season.1 Around the same time John Christopher Smith (born 1712) began to receive some form of musical instruction from Handel.
