An excellently trained classical guitarist does not necessarily make an excellent electric guitarist. As guitarists are increasingly being asked to perform on the e-guitar in contemporary music, their time and focus must become more technical in a new way. What will truly differentiate certain artists is a willingness to spend copious amounts of time understanding their gear and practicing with their rig, achieving a grasp on how all of the pieces of their gear interact and affect one another. The instrument to be practiced on does not only consist of the guitar, but of the entirety of their setup – amps, signal processing, and all of the elements in between that affect and sculpt tone. A good e-guitarist will have opinions and preferences for types of gear and the tone they shape.
