Which Snakes Are Venomous?
摘要
Of the approximately 4000 known snake species, about 700 are venomous. However, the figures in the literature are inconsistent. Most venomous snakes are found in South America, with the fewest in Europe. Venomous snakes are divided into elapids (Elapidae) and vipers (Viperidae). Elapids include, for example, sea snakes (Hydrophiinae) and cobras (Naja), while vipers include rattlesnakes (Crotalus) as well as, in our region, adders and common European vipers (Viperinae). Venomous snakes are not very large; their length rarely exceeds 100–150 cm. The largest venomous snake is the king cobra, which is native to Southeast Asia and reaches a length of 3.3–3.8 m (Fig. 1). A record length of 4.57 m has been reported.
