The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to redefine the fundamental ethical and moral questions of our society. As AI systems are increasingly deployed in areas such as medicine, justice, and mobility, the urgent question arises of how machines make moral decisions and what limits should be imposed on them. Ethics, traditionally closely linked to human consciousness, empathy, and reflection, is elevated to a new level by the introduction of algorithmic systems: Can machines act “morally”? Should they even do so? And how can responsibility and liability be distributed in a world where “autonomous” systems are taking on more and more tasks?
