Education as a Way to Connect the Self with the World. Taking Wilhelm Von Humboldt’s Concept of Bildung into the Anthropocene
摘要
The concept of world citizenship education is developed with reference to the theory of Bildung of the Prussian anthropologist, political philosopher, and educational reformer Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767–1835). Firstly, the concept of the Anthropocene is explained from a pedagogical perspective, with particular reference to points of criticism of education for sustainable development and global citizenship education, both of which can be understood as reactions to the Anthropocene. Secondly, Humboldt’s theory of Bildung is presented, demonstrating that its specific focus on the concept of “world” makes it suitable for addressing the shortcomings of concepts such as education for sustainable development and global citizenship education. Thirdly, with reference to post-humanist considerations, Humboldt’s theory of Bildung is brought into the Anthropocene by decentering it.
