As the founder of the International Youth Library (IYL) in 1949 and of IBBY in 1953, Jella Lepman is rightly celebrated as one of the initiators of the International Children’s Literature Movement. She also regarded helping post-war German publishers to acquire the rights to translate quality foreign books as a way of kick-starting a modern, open, West-German children’s literature, and credits herself, in her memoir Die Kinderbuchbrücke (A Bridge of Children’s Books), with having being successful in this regard. While not wanting to diminish Lepman’s overall achievements, this article takes a closer look at this area of her work and, based on material from the Historical Archive of the IYL, attempts to reconstruct the degree of Lepman’s actual influence on publishers. This is combined with an appraisal of different assessments of her impact. The article concludes with a discussion of the nature of Lepman’s often-invoked concept of international understanding through children’s literature.
