This first chapter attempts to introduce important plasma phenomena using simple examples. The discussion is not exhaustive and will be presented in more detail and supplemented in later chapters. The aim is to develop an initial “feel” for the special properties of plasmas, which can (hopefully) serve as a guide during the more detailed and systematic derivations that follow.
