Freud attributed this to the conservative nature of the drive, to the stickiness, inertia, and sluggishness of the libido. Instead of relinquishing the satisfaction of erotic wishes through recollection and reality testing, the patient seeks their repetition. From the perspective of contemporary psychoanalysis, whose main current is object relations psychology (Abel, 2023), we could expand the concept of libido to include a multitude of other human wishes, needs, longings, and impulses that are repeatedly fulfilled in the same way or remain unsatisfied, even when we have long since understood their emotional backgrounds.
