Acute carotid dissection is a vascular disease that can be managed conservatively and typically arises spontaneously or as a result of a hypertensive crisis, usually in the presence of pre-existing atherosclerosis. However, cervical vessel dissection can also be caused by cervical spine trauma. In cases of aortic dissection, it is generally recommended to routinely assess the carotid arteries as well.
